Our Kindergarten has been designed to be an integral part of Family Day Care South Cairns Scheme as children have the possibility of attending an approved kindy program while staying within their Family Day Care environment.
Children who do not attend Family Day Care South Scheme are welcome to attend our Kindergarten Program.
Family Day Care South Cairns Community Kindergarten follows the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) and Queensland Kindergarten Learning Guideline and is governed by The Gowrie.
The Kindergarten must abide by Queensland Government guidelines and is only available to children who in the year before Prep (i.e. Children who are 4 years by 30th June in the year they start Kindergarten) can attend the approved program.
Children will be offered a rich play-based program and have an opportunity to experience a program that:
Family Day Care South Cairns Community Kindergarten will follow the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) and the Queensland Kindergarten Learning Guideline. The EYLF focuses on children from birth to five years and describes a vision of children’s learning characterised by Belonging, Being and Becoming; and the Queensland Kindergarten Learning Guideline aims to specifically enrich children’s learning in the kindergarten year. In Queensland this is the year before the preparatory year of schooling.
Family Day Care South Cairns Community Kindergarten will also endorse and implement Family Day Care South Cairns Association Incorporation’s Philosophy. This Philosophy unites both services and supports our beliefs in children, their development and the importance of respectful relationships between all stakeholders of our Scheme.
As the Kindergarten is an approved program under the Queensland Government there are two documents that will be implemented and embedded into practice. Both these documents relate to the Early Years Learning Framework:
Belonging, Being and Becoming are three simple words that sum up what we will be doing – every child attending kindergarten will experience a genuine sense of belonging, they will have time and space to be themselves and be supported in who they are becoming.
The Queensland Kindergarten Learning Guideline specifically focuses on enriching children’s learning in the kindergarten year. The Guideline provides advice to support kindergarten teachers to strengthen the children’s sense of belonging, being and becoming. The Guideline has five learning and development areas that relate to the five broad learning outcomes in the Early Years Learning Framework, which are as follows:
The children will learn to ask questions and seek their own answers and finally to become responsible for their own learning. The children are allowed to learn at their own pace with the freedom to choose a task and complete it to their own satisfaction. We provide the opportunity for children to experience limits and interact with concerned adults who constantly extend on children’s learning respecting them as developing individuals.
The flexible daily “timetable” provides a guideline of how each day may run. The program changes daily in line with activities/interests initiated by the children as well as staff-manipulated activities to allow for individual group needs.

Our Kindergarten has the same philosophy as Family Day Care in offering small group education and care. Although our kindergarten is licenced for 22 children we prefer to cater up to a maximum of 15-20 children as we believe respecting each child’s unique personality, competencies and background is crucial in providing the best care and education in an early childhood setting.
For many children who already attend Family Day Care South Cairns Scheme, they are aware of our Kindy program as it is housed within the Co-ordination Unit and quite often they attend other extra-curricular activities with their educator.
Parents and children will have an opportunity to have an interview with the Kindergarten Teacher and view the kindy environment. Please ring the Co-ordination Unit if you would like to make an appointment.
Fees to attend the approved Kindergarten Program are charged out as a daily fee. If children have a current contract with an educator and attends care on a regular basis the family will received a discount on their kindy fees and these fees will be charged through the educator’s timesheets on a weekly basis.
Dependent on the kindy days and the care days’ educators may be responsible for signing children in and out of our kindy program and in and out of their service.
For children who do not attend Family Day Care South Cairns Scheme the family will be invoiced on a term or fortnightly basis.
